There is method to the company madness in offering products outside of the network of distributors. The online sales process captures buyer contact information, thereby generating revenue while building the customer database. There is also the belief that there is a high degree of possibility that a satisfied preferred customer will ultimately be turned into a sales distributor.
Jumping on the healthy lifestyle and anti-aging mania that feeds a multi-billion dollar market, the company manufactures a number of nutritional and skin care products. The nutritional products include vitamins, drink mixes, energy bars and drinks, plus products for the hair, face and skin. Considered to be fairly pricey, the company maintains the price reflects the high quality under which the products are manufactured. These claims were somewhat affirmed by a Scientific Achievement Award in 2009.
Unlike the majority of MLM companies, Usana is publicly traded on the NASDEQ and USNA markets. They are therefore responsible to a group of shareholders for their viability in the global marketplace. The company has cleverly ensured a self-perpetuating cycle of sales through their design of the sales associate payment plan.
As in the days of the vacuum dealer salesman, the sales associates are required to purchase the products before reselling them. There is a strict quota and point system. A monthly quota of product must be purchased and sold in order to earn points for payment. The same system is employed in the monthly enrollment of new sales associates. This system continues ad infinitum growing sales and a sales force in the process.
