Make The Most Of London Late Room Discounts

One of the best things about winter is the revival of ice skating, and one of the best places to enjoy this festive activity is London. There are several fantastic rinks to choose from, and with late deals on rooms at London hotels, it’s a great idea to book a last-minute weekend break to the capital.

Outside the grand facade of the Natural History Museum is one of London’s most well-loved ice skating rinks. As well as its impressive surroundings there is an inviting cafe and a viewing platform. Once you’ve finished ice skating you may want to look around the amazing museum, or take a walk to Hyde Park, a few minutes away. You’ll find great late deals on rooms at the nearby Kensington Rooms hotel.

Somerset House is a stunning building, and within its central courtyard you'll discover the equally-stunning ice skating rink. They have a huge Christmas tree at the entrance, and a cafe along one side selling hot drinks or champagne. The Strand Palace Hotel is close by, with many deals on late rooms.

The London Eye celebrates its tenth year this year, and with it brings Eye-Skate, an ice-skating rink at its base. Your Eye-Skate ticket will also get you into the new London Eye 4D Experience, a cinematic experience which effects all senses! To get involved in this exciting occasion, book yourself into the Marriott London County Hall hotel and find great deals on late rooms.

In the east side of London you’ll find an ice-skating rink within the moat of the Tower of London. Normally a no-go area for tourists, it’s one of the only times you’ll be able to enjoy this part of this historical fortress so it’s worth taking the opportunity. Book the Ibis London City Hotel for late deals and last-minute room deals.

Even if you're not keen on ice-skating, there is plenty to do in the capital, so book yourself a late weekend break to London. Given the great discounts on late rooms at many London hotels, it's worth it!

In Ice Skating: Steps to Success, Karin Kuenzle-Watson nine-time Swiss National Champion, former Professional World Champion, and one of skating's best instructors shares with readers the steps that she and many of her students learned on their way to becoming elite competitive skaters. Most instruction books available on ice skating tend to focus on advanced jumps or spins, assuming the reader will learn the basics through professional instruction. Ice Skating: Steps to Success, however, covers fundamental skills in a way that's easy to understand and apply. Part of the highly popular Steps to Success Activity Series, this book includes 11 steps (chapters) that progress from basic to intermediate skills. It features over 300 illustrations that make it possible to learn proper form and technique. Readers will learn how to * use standard methods of gaining forward and backward speed; * execute four different methods of stopping; * fall properly and get up easily; * change direction without loss of control; and * control the skate edges in order to prepare for advanced maneuvers, including jumps, spins, and footwork. Excerpt: Surya Bonaly (born December 15, 1973) is a French-American professional figure skater. Bonaly was born in Nice, France in 1973 and adopted by Suzanne Bonaly, a physical education teacher, and her husband Georges, an architect who worked for the government. Georges and Suzanne initially told the press their daughter had been born on the island of Réunion. When Surya approached the age of 18 and began researching her birth history, George and Suzanne admitted Surya was born to a mother who was from the island and that Surya had not been born on the island itself. Didier Gailhaguet, who was the first coach of her competitive career, admitted fabricating the story because he thought it favorable to the press.. It was said that Gailhaguet discovered Surya when she was 10 years old ice skating in a public skating session. Years later, however, Surya said she wanted to skate in Gailhaguet's competitive skating group and actually asked to participate. Bonaly went on to become a nine-time French National Figure Skating Champion (19891997) and won the European Figure Skating Championships five times (19911995). She was a three-time silver medalist at the World Figure Skating Championships (19931995), but she never managed to win a world title, despite her strong jumping ability. Nor did she ever win a medal in the Winter Olympics, placing 5th in 1992 in Albertville, 4th in 1994 at Lillehammer, and 10th in 1998 at Nagano. Bonaly took the Athlete's Oath at the 1992 Winter Olympics. Formerly a competitive gymnast, Bonaly is famous for her backflip landed on only one blade; she is considered the only skater in the world capable of this move. She is also known for having attempted a quadruple toe loop jump at the 1991 World Figure Skating Championships - th... More:

Artistic Impressions: Figure Skating, Masculinity, and the Limits of Sport

Artistic Impressions: Figure Skating, Masculinity, and the Limits of Sport

$55.03

In contemporary North America, figure skating ranks among the most 'feminine' of sports and few boys take it up for fear of being labelled effeminate or gay. Yet figure skating was once an exclusively male pastime - women did not skate in significant numbers until the late 1800s, at least a century after the founding of the first skating club. Only in the 1930s did figure skating begin to acquire its feminine image.Artistic Impressions is the first history to trace figure skating's striking transformation from gentlemen's art to 'girls' sport.' With a focus on masculinity, Mary Louise Adams examines how skating's evolving gender identity has been reflected on the ice and in the media, looking at rules, technique, and style and at ongoing debates about the place of 'art' in sport. Uncovering the little known history of skating, Artistic Impressions shows how ideas about sport, gender, and sexuality have combined to limit the forms of physical expression available to men.

 Compulsory Figures

Compulsory Figures

$42.99

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Compulsory figures or school figures were formerly an aspect of the sport of figure skating, from which the sport derives its name. Carving specific patterns or figures into the ice was the original focus of the sport. The patterns of compulsory figures all derive from the basic figure eight. Although figures no longer exist in competition, they have evolved into the contemporary Moves in the field (MIF) discipline of figure skating. Up until 1947, competitors at figure skating events were required to skate a total of 12 figures (6 different figures skated on both feet) which were worth 60% of the total score. With the increasing number of entrants, figures competitions (which were then skated outdoors) began to take a very long time, so in 1948 the number of figures was reduced to six (alternating left and right foot starts) while retaining their weight at 60%. This competition format continued until 1968.

 Dancing on Ice (UK)

Dancing on Ice (UK)

$69.99

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Dancing on Ice is a British television show, in which celebrities and their professional partners figure skate in front of a panel of judges. The format, devised by LWT, has been a prime-time hit in eight different countries, including Italy and Chile. In Australia, where it was titled Torvill and Dean's Dancing on Ice, it was axed after just one series. Originally titled Skating With Celebrities the show was renamed following the failure of ITV's celebrity orientated 2005 summer schedule. Dancing on Ice is frequently compared to BBC's Strictly Come Dancing. The show was given a January premier amidst network doubts about its visibility but became a surprise hit in Britain, where it became the third highest rated television show of 2006. It attained an impressive thirteen million viewers for the final in March. Britain's best-known ice-skating duo and former Olympic champions Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean help to train the aspiring dancers, and also appear throughout the show with comments and advice. Judge Karen Barber also trains the skaters for the live show.
